About me

Storyteller / Cultural manager

April Cosmic / Tucson, AZ / Ciudad Obregón, SON

I grew up between the two sides of a border, and it left me with a habit: noticing what one place has that the other doesn't.

Almost everything I do starts there, with noticing what's missing.

Obregón was missing a lot. Places to dance without asking for permission. Photos that challenged the idea of capturing reality. Conversations about what happens here. I could wait for someone else to make them, or leave and look for them in another city. I stayed and did as much as I could.

My mind works like this: I see something, take it apart to understand why it works or why it doesn't, and put it back together differently. It happens with a party, a brand, a photo, the way a school talks to people. Analyzing is my favorite sport, but it's useless to me unless it ends in something people can dance to, look at or listen to.

That's why I don't have just one trade. The DJ reads the floor. The photographer decides what stays out of the frame. The communicator thinks about how the message lands. The Mother thinks about who comes after her. It's the same question from different angles: what does this moment need, and how do I make it happen.

I care about permanence. A ball lasts a few hours, a house lasts years. That's why I think in systems: who holds it up, how it gets told, what happens when I'm not there.

I change my mind when there are reasons to, and I say what I see even when it isn't what people wanted to hear. If you invite me to a project, a judging panel or a table, I won't show up just to applaud. I'll show up to understand, ask the uncomfortable question and help you make the thing exist.

Big things happen in the desert too. Usually because someone decided not to wait.
